Welcome
Hello Friends.
Thanks for tuning in to Twelve Minute Health Bits. This is your host, Christen Hull, providing health and wellness support for the 21st century. We will be talking about using simple methods from today and centuries ago to keep our bodies healthy. Our goal is to daily stay “Above the Wellness Line.” In this podcast I will be giving you tips and tricks on how to daily make small changes to your life in order to keep your body well.
Episode 15 - Back to School - Support your Health Now
School is coming my friends. It is going to look differently this year, but one thing you want to be sure of, is supporting your children’s immune system NOW, not when they are exposed to something. This will make your child’s body much more equipped to fight off anything that comes along. This episode is going to discuss simple things you can do to get your family’s immune system in tip top shape for the upcoming school year!
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, once said, “I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” Are you doing your due diligence as a learner? Are you working to learn new information in order to make your life better tomorrow than it was today? As you listen to this information, please keep in mind this quote. An open mind, doing your own research, and formulating what you will do with the information could really benefit your family and those you interact with.
Keep an Open Mind and Embrace Learning
One of the things I have learned in my natural health journey is that it is so important to keep an open mind. Someone may have a health issue that has a simple solution; however, if they are not willing to try something new, do the work, make the changes, and utilize a new way, then the information is useless.
My concern this school year is that schools will be laden with chemicals from deep cleaning that health officials deem necessary. Synthetic chemicals are toxic and may kill nasty bugs that come your family’s way; however, they will also kill good bugs as well. These synthetic chemicals will damage your healthy microbiome. This may be new information for you. So I ask that you keep an open mind, hear me out through the end, and then do your own research. If you have common sense essential oil blend from Young Living I ask that you grab it, place a few drops on your palms, rub your palms together, cup your palms over your mouth and nose, and breathe in three to five long, slow deep breaths. If you do not have the common sense blend, please use frankincense and do the same process. Common sense is a blend formulated to help relieve feelings of defensiveness and help keep an open mind when learning something new.
The Link between our Immune System and Gut Health
Our immune system and gut are directly related. It is so important to keep our gut healthy and happy in order to be able to combat easy day-to-day illnesses and even tougher things that may come our way. A healthy microbiome, or gut bacteria, is vital for an immune system that is reinforced to fight the yuck. The first thing you want to make sure you do for healthy gut bacteria is to limit your exposure to synthetic chemicals as much as possible. For instance, chemical cleaners such as bleach, hand sanitizers such as purell (and others), actually kill healthy gut bacteria while getting rid of bad bacteria as well. Double check your personal care products to ensure they are made with ingredients that are not synthetically formulated and get rid of the ones that are by swapping them out for more safe ones. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled 75 brands of hand sanitizers in July of 2020 because they are fatal if ingested and harmful if absorbed (Sandoval, 2020). Everything you put on your skin is absorbed in your body in 26 seconds. Please, please, check the ingredients. Young Living makes a hand sanitizer that is completely plant based with 65% alcohol so you know it is going to do the job, but because it has essential oils in it, it is going to support healthy microbiome in your gut while killing the bad stuff (Thieves waterless hand sanitizer with peppermint oil, 2018). If you do a quick search on PubMed, you will find just how effective essential oils such as clove, eucalyptus, and peppermint are at killing the yuck. Here is one such study on clove called Microbicide activity of clove essential oil (Eugenia caryophyllata) (Nuñez & D’ Aquino, 2012).
Diets that Support Our Immune System
The reality of our current situation is our bodies need so much more nutritional support than we are able to supply them through food. We are eating food that is not as nourishing as what it was decades ago, and many of the common health annoyances we face as a society today would not exist if we would supplement vitamins and minerals every body needs, and get rid of synthetic chemicals.
But let’s first talk about diet because that is one of the most important things in supporting our immune system. Processed and canned food is dead. It has a frequency of zero and contains little to no nourishment for the body. Along with that, this food can contain ingredients that are not helpful to our immune system. For example, a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese contains synthetic vitamins and according to an article published by the New York Daily News (Gibbs, 2017) it can also contain several chemicals. Even though these chemicals may be safe to consume one time, they do build up in your system and cause damage as they accumulate.
As much as possible, eat foods that are organic and fresh. For example, if you can eat a real tomato instead of a can of tomatoes, that is so much better for you. If you are able to make homemade chicken noodle soup with gluten free noodles and fresh vegetables, that is going to have so much more nourishment than a can of chicken noodle soup.
Nutritional Supplements - Antioxidants
Supplementing is so important as well. I am not a purist. I do not believe we can get all of our nourishment from our food in today’s world. We cannot avoid toxins, they are all over our world. So, we need to give our body the tools it needs to fight off and combat toxins. NingXia Red is one of the best forms of antioxidants known. It has an oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) of 30,000 in some cases and more in others. This means that it has an amazing ability to push out free radicals in our bodies caused by the toxins in our environment. Drinking just two ounces a day will help support your immune system and fight off any yuck that might come your way (Young, Lawrence, & Schreuder, 2006).
Nutritional Supplements - Probiotics
Probiotics help keep microbiome healthy and fight nasty invaders. Because the cells in our gut lining excrete large amounts of antibodies on a daily basis, keeping those cells healthy is so important. There are two probiotics that I have studied that contain a great mix of bacteria necessary for a healthy gut. Young Living’s Life 9 and MightyPro. MightyPro is technically for kids, but I tend to take it myself because it is created without refined sugar and tastes absolutely amazing.
Nutritional Supplements - Inner Defense and Vitamin C
Another tool that our family has in our natural medicine cabinet on an “as needed” basis is Inner Defense. Inner Defense reinforces systematic defenses and creates an unfriendly terrain for yeast and fungus. It has also been shown to promote healthy respiratory function. It contains important oils such as thyme, thieves, and oregano which are high in thymol, carvacrol, and eugenol for incredible immune support. We keep one bottle of Inner Defense on hand per person in the house. If something horrible happens with someone’s health, I might need to give them up to three or four capsules a day for a short time to combat the issue. If my son happens to step on a rusty nail that penetrates his foot, he would be getting oils topically on site, and taking Inner Defense and high doses of vitamin C to combat what could possibly happen to his health. If one of my children happens to be exposed to an unfriendly bug that could leave them pretty down and out, I will definitely be supplementing them with Inner Defense and high doses of vitamin C. We also would be having the entire family take one Inner Defense per day until the threat is gone, to ensure the rest of us stay healthy. See my podcast 10 Vitamin C - Why everyone should be Supplementing for more information about the benefits of high dose vitamin C.
Nutritional Supplements - Vitamin D
Right now, vitamin D is a must! I did podcast 12 The Sun, Vitamin D, and Sunscreen Concerns on the value of vitamin D, because I am such a firm believer in the benefits of supplementing with quality vitamin D.
The Key to a Healthy Immune System - Whole Foods and Nutritional Supplements
In a nutshell, our family daily eats a healthy, whole foods diet, takes a probiotic, drinks two ounces of NingXia Red, and takes a quality vitamin D. In addition to that we keep immune supporting Inner Defense, ImmuPro Chewable Tablets, and essential oils on hand that will help in times when invaders may come to wreak havoc. These have worked immensely well for us. I have four children who have never been on any more intense interventions than this, except when we had one broken arm!
The Right Balance
Because typical conventional methods shut down the immune system and kill beneficial gut bacteria, it is incredibly important to catch issues before they get out of control. However, in my years of working in natural health, I have seen how well proper supplementation can work, even in the roughest cases. It is so important to have someone help you find the right balance that may work for you. I would love to have you join my Wellness Team! This journey has brought so much joy to our family that I cannot keep it a secret!
