Welcome

Hello Friends.

Thanks for tuning in to Twelve Minute Health Bits. This is your host, Christen Hull, providing health and wellness support for the 21st century. We will be talking about using simple methods from today and centuries ago to keep our bodies healthy. Our goal is to daily stay “Above the Wellness Line.” In this podcast I will be giving you tips and tricks on how to daily make small changes to your life in order to keep your body well.

Episode 41 - A Healthy Liver

Today we are going to talk about an organ in your body that is absolutely crucial to your health and wellness. This organ is responsible for cleaning and filtering your blood; metabolizing fats, sugars, and proteins; clearing toxins from the body; breaking down chemicals; producing enzymes to help digest your food; producing bile to help emulsify and absorb fat; producing and regulating cholesterol; regulating hormones and hormone production; and balancing sugars.

Thank you so much for tuning in and learning more about your liver today! If you have any question regarding any of the information please send me a message or you can also check into the book “Inner Transformations Using Essential Oils.” I am happy to get you information on where to get this book. It is an excellent resource to have in your natural health medicine cabinet.

Do you have any of these?

A clouded liver is not just someone who has drank a lot of alcohol. A clouded liver can be anyone who has allergies, hay fever, is sensitive to chemicals, migraines or frequent headaches, weakened immune system, anger issues, depression, digestion discomfort, has intense food cravings, extra fatigue, hormonal imbalances, bad dark circles under the eyes, bad breath, brain fog, skin issues or rashes, sleep trouble, inability to lose weight, excessive gas, high blood pressure, acid reflux, heartburn, gallbladder issues, has a strong body odor, or skin blemishes.

Importance of a Liver Cleanse

So many people fall into these categories and people look at me funny when I ask, "have you ever thought about a liver cleanse?” But really, this is so important for your overall health and wellness! Basically, just like you get your car’s oil changed it is important to clean out your liver once a year. Spring is a normal and nice time of the year to do a liver cleanse. Literally, it has made all the difference for me in my allergies. In the spring is when I used to, prior to regular liver cleanses, get so stuffed up. My eyes would water for a couple hours after getting out of bed in the morning. My nose would run and run and run. I would use so many tissues. It was so bad and frustrating for me because I could not even think clearly until noon every day. This has helped me tremendously.

Lower Functioning Livers

Causes for lower functioning liver can be mercury fillings for cavities, synthetic chemical cleaners, antibiotics, poor diet, alcohol consumption, acetaminophen use, over the counter drugs, vaccines which have heavy metals in them, synthetic chemicals in personal care products, over eating, outdoor pollution, and indoor pollution (candles, wax warmers/plug ins, which are so harmful for your liver). Lotions and soaps from regular stores have a lot of synthetic chemicals in them. Outgassing from new carpet, paint, and stain. Outdoor pollution such as cigarette smoke, gas fumes, and factory emissions.

A fun fact, a toxic liver or an overloaded liver cannot store vitamin A as efficiently which can lead to inflammation, infections, and some skin rashes. So how should someone cleanse their liver? Every spring it is suggested to cleanse the liver due to unavoidable toxins in our environment. We all are around toxins, whether you think you are or not. Whether you think you have cleaned up your house or not, you really cannot avoid toxins in our toxic world. If you go outside you smell gas pollution, if you go inside and you burn candles you have air pollution in your house. If you use conventional laundry detergent or dryer sheets or any type of traditional cleaners, they are all harmful for your liver. Anyone wanting to get pregnant should also do a liver cleanse because sometimes our hormones, if we have an overload of certain types, can load up in our liver and cause a clogged liver as well. Anyone who has recently traveled (airports, planes, public restrooms) has been around lots of synthetic chemicals and they are hard on your liver. If you still have mercury tooth fillings in your mouth it is a good idea to get them removed if you are able to. Please go to a dentist who knows what they are doing. They should be giving you activated charcoal and vitamin c in order to flush out those toxins. You do not want to just drill them out and be done with it. You really want to have someone who knows what they are doing in order to get them out and that does not cause more harm for your health. If you have mercury fillings in your mouth, every time you eat, drink, or brush your teeth you are activating that mercury! So if you can replace them with composite fillings, that is much better for you. If you have any exposure to heavy metals or lead you would want to do a liver cleanse as well.

Liver Cleanse Challenge

Our Wellness Team is doing a liver cleanse challenge, please send me a message and I will get you all the details of the challenge. Super easy to do. You want to buy the products to help support your liver, and you also want to do a Vital Life Juice. The Vital Life Juice contains beets, carrots, celery, green apples, and ginger (which you can use ginger essential oil that is safe for consumption). If you are able to, please use organic produce. When you are on the liver cleanse which is five days, or longer if you really feel like your liver is really toxic and you need to, you want to make sure you are eating a whole foods plant based diet and limiting refined sugar and white refined carbohydrates such as gluten.

The Vital Life Juice is not really incredibly yummy, I will be honest, but it is something that you can tolerate. My kids do drink it, and you add green apples to it which helps make it a little but sweeter. You want to make sure you are drinking half your body weight in ounces of water during the cleanse per day. If you weigh 120 pounds you want to drink 60 ounces of water per day. You can add citrus vitality oils, those help support your liver while doing this. You want to also make sure you get synthetic chemicals out of your house as much as possible. If you are cleaning out your liver you want to be checking those products to make sure you are not adding chemicals to your liver and not adding to the problem.

The cleanse can be adjusted based on your body’s needs and response. You might have some detox responses, such as becoming lethargic or a rash. Do not let those detox affects deter you! Day two is always the hardest of the liver cleanse, and once you get past day three you are doing pretty well. Day five is usually pretty easy. If you need to go longer you totally can. Sometimes I have gone for a week. Some people have even gone two weeks because they felt their liver was really toxic at the time. Make sure you are having two to three good bowel movements per day, which the water helps with.

For the Vital Life Juice you will need a juicer, and sometimes you can find used ones at Goodwill or Savers. The recipe for one day of Vital Life Juice is half a head of celery, two large red beets, two and a half carrots, two green apples, and two knobs of ginger. You do need a lot of produce for the week, and you sip on it throughout the day. Make sure to sip and not gulp it, so that your blood sugar levels do not go crazy high. It should help to stabilize blood sugars if you sip on it. It is easier for your body to get used to it also. If you are interested in the full liver cleanse and hearing about what other supplements are involved in this, please send me a message at www.twelve-stones.net or send me a text at 218-481-5088 I am happy to get the information to you, and getting you cleaning out your liver with the rest of us. You will not regret taking this step and really helping support your health and your body. I hope this is a good step for you and I am praying for health and wellness for you my friend. Have a wonderful day and thanks for tuning in to this edition of Twelve Minutes Health Bits.

Podcast 40 Healthy Mouth and Gums

Listen to the episode here https://www.buzzsprout.com/974632/8359625

Episode 40 - Healthy Mouth and Gums

Today we are going to be talking about cavities. I wish I could say I am the type of person who has gone my entire life without a cavity but that is simply not true. When I was in my early 20s, I had gotten into some unhealthy lifestyle choices that brought about nine cavities right around the time I graduated college. I had no cavities prior to this. I had these cavities filled as cheaply as I possibly could because of the fact that I did not have a lot of money.

Consequences of Poor Oral Health

But, one thing led to another and I had nine cheap mercury fills put into my mouth and six months later I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. Graves Disease was life altering for me. It changed my life! I lost 20 pounds in two months. My resting heart rate was 120 beats per minute, I was not sleeping, and experienced many other symptoms. As soon as I figured out what was going on, I was able to bring my thyroid back down into place and heal it naturally. One of the things I did to heal my thyroid was I had my mercury fillings removed later in life. This was very helpful in the healing process because the thyroid is deeply affected by heavy metals. So you really want to be careful not to put those heavy metals into your body, especially mercury fillings! If you have a filling going in, please do the composite fillings, they are much better for you.

Let’s Learn Together

Today, I am going to talk about preventing and hopefully never having to have nine fillings put in like I did. Please learn from my mistakes here friends, this is not a podcast to say, “look at me, I did a wonderful job with this stuff.” Because I did not, and I really want you to learn from my mistakes!

Oral Health Impacts Your Entire Body

Over the course of my life I have learned a lot about taking care of my health, my oral health included. I did not know that the mouth is directly related to the entire body until I started to get into natural health a little more.

So your mouth, and the pH in your mouth, directly affects your entire body and it is crazy when you start to dive into that. Today, we are really going to talk about how you prevent those cavities, and if you have one, is it possible to remineralize it and heal it? And yes, it is possible! I have as of now remineralized two teeth and I have one more cavity I am working on currently. I am praying that I can heal this one as well. I really hate getting drilling and hate having a foreign substance in my body. I do not like novocaine and anything like that. I would much rather use some natural options on it if I possibly can.

Essential Minerals

Minerals are so important in making sure your teeth have what they need. Minerals that are put into your body, such as water that has the proper minerals you definitely need to make sure you are supplementing. Even still, supplementing with minerals is so important. A supplement that was crucial for me, and my tooth health in my journey, has been Mineral Essence. Mineral Essence has a very bioavailable form of magnesium, but also all the mineral friends that go along with it.

Now, it is gross and it does not taste great; however, I take it because I know it is good for me. It has really significantly helped the mouths of my children as well. So if you have reverse osmosis water that does not put the minerals back into the water you need to double check that you are taking a mineral supplement. Make sure it is a good source of magnesium and bioavailable minerals because you can get some pretty junky supplements that really do more harm than good.

Oil Pulling

Another thing that is super important is oil pulling. Oil pulling is just basically taking a little bit of coconut oil or Thieves toothpaste, also works. Thieves toothpaste has coconut oil in it and other essential oils that are really helpful for the teeth and gums and I use that to oil pull. You put a squirt of that toothpaste in your mouth or a tablespoon of coconut oil. If you use coconut oil you can add in Thieves vitality essential oil and swish all that around. You are going to try to keep that in your mouth for 20 minutes, 15 is good, but 20 is better. It pulls all those toxins out of your mouth so that you get all that bacteria and nasty stuff out. It even pulls toxins out of your body as well. There is some really great research on oil pulling and the benefits of it. If you want any of my research on that, please send me a message and I would be happy to provide you with that.

What Does Oil Pulling Actually Do?

Oil pulling helps with the excretion of toxic heavy metals by saliva. It activates salivary enzymes which absorb toxins, it detoxifies and purifies the entire human body, and reduces plaque including plaque induced gingivitis. It acts as an antifungal for the mouth, helps with bleeding gums, and repairs swollen gums. It reduces free radical activity in the oral cavity. It generates antioxidants, your teeth become whiter, breath becomes fresher, and your oral cavity muscles become stronger. It reduces tooth pain and general sensitivity in the mouth. Oil pulling can also reduce the number of harmful bacteria found in plaque and saliva that would wear away enamel and cause tooth decay or cavities. Certain carrier oils used in the oil pulling process, such as coconut oil, have anti-inflammatory properties that aid in reducing inflammation associated with gum disease. It is beneficial for sore throats, dry face, impaired vision, taste loss, and anosmia. It increases the metabolism in the body.

I laugh because there are so many things a 15 minute oil pull a day could really help with. Everyone should be oil pulling, it is so good for you. There are studies listed on the NAH website about this. One study showed a 20% reduction in bacteria count after 40 days of oil pulling with sesame oil, as well as a reduction in the severity of dental cavities. It reversed cavities. Another study on 60 teens showed a 50% decrease in plaque and gingivitis after four weeks of daily oil pulling. In a third study with adolescents, oil pulling out performed the antiseptic chlorhexidine, with the amount of bacteria and plaque decreasing while the chlorhexidine group stayed the same.

Basically, oil attracts the lipid layer of bacteria cells and causes them to stick to the oil, hence oil pulling. You are pulling that bacteria out of your mouth. This starts to happen just after five minutes. Oil pulling for 20 minutes, will ensure thorough removal of bad bacteria. The oil will coat the teeth and gingiva and will inhibit bacteria responsible for gingivitis, periodontitis, bad breath, bleeding gums, and dry mouth. Oil pulling is one of the best things you can do for your oral health. A healthy diet is also important, lots of sugar and soda are really not good for your teeth and gums. Other things like eating healthy fats such as avocados are really good, including balancing the pH in your body as well. If you have a very acidic body you may notice more cavities or decay in your mouth.

The Dangers of Fluoride

Other things to note - fluoride is not good for you! I am not sure if you know this yet, or if you have gotten the memo, but fluoride is actually a neurotoxin. It is not something that should be in any of your dental care products. Numerous studies have linked fluoride use to high lead levels in the body, brain damage, and a lowered IQ. It may also lower thyroid function, disrupt collagen in the skin which causes wrinkles, cause arthritis, it is linked to bone cancer, linked to hyper-activity and/or lethargy, and linked to dementia. It activates about 62 enzymes in the gut, is linked to muscle disorders, inhibits formation of antibodies, causes genetic damage and cell death, increases tumor and cancer rates, and disrupts the immune system. So, fluoride is a no go! Please be careful to check your dental ingredients, even the smallest amount of fluoride in your toothpaste is not good for you. Make sure to double check your personal care products.

My Oral Routine

I oil pulling with Thieves toothpaste, which I absolutely love because it is quick and convenient. I do add a couple drops of Myhre essential oil into my toothpaste, that I am oil pulling with, because Myhre is really great for teeth and gums. I also brush with Thieves toothpaste after I eat and floss with Thieves dental floss. They work amazing for me and I know they do not have fluoride and SLS, which is sodium lauryl sulfate, so keep that in mind. When you use the Thieves toothpaste it does not foam up like your other toothpaste brands do, because it does not have that toxic chemical in it that makes it foam. This chemical you do not want in your toothpaste.

Brushing all around your tongue is really important, including the inside of your lower teeth, and really rinsing with the Thieves mouthwash when you are done as well. I add a little birch xylitol to my Thieves mouthwash because my holistic dentist has recommended that. Birch xylitol is also really good for your teeth.

I hope that this was helpful and if you have any questions about proper gum and teeth health I would be super excited to share any other information that I have. If you have any other ideas I am happy to hear them.

Podcast 39 The Hidden Dangers of Shampoo

Episode 39 - The Hidden Dangers of Shampoo

Super excited to talk about hair! I want to share with you a little about my journey with my hair when I moved to living holistically. I started to learn about ingredients and which could hurt and harm our bodies but I just was not sure if I was ready to give up my hair and the chemicals I used to make my hair what I thought was great. But then I realized those chemicals are leaching into my body, into my kids’ bodies, and I did not want that anymore. So if I was really going to live this holistic lifestyle, I needed to clean up my hair products as well.

15 Most Dangerous Chemicals. I learned about the 15 most dangerous chemicals and could not go back.

  • Sulfates which can cause frizzy hair, are hormone disruptors, and can hurt the environment. Look for the words like SLS or sodium lauryl sulfate that is how it is labeled on products.

  • Parabens. Another harmful chemical is parabens. They mimic hormone estrogen and have been linked to breast cancer are labeled as butyl, propyl, and ether anything with words starting with those prefixes are parabens.

  • Polyethylene glycol is a derivative of petroleum and is used in the gas industry. It is also a thickening agent so many people thought it was great to put in shampoo and other personal care products. It can damage the scalp long term. Some ways it is labeled is 100, 120, 14M, 30, 3275, and so on.

  • Phthalates are used in hair care products to increase spreadability of the product. They make the perfume and synthetic fragrances stick to your scalp and hair. They are also endocrine disruptors, meaning they can cause early puberty in girls and reduce sperm count in men.

  • Formaldehyde is used as a preservative, you will see it labeled on the products as bronopol imidazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, coratin 15, or diazolidinyl urea.

  • Triclosan is an antibacterial and antifungal agent added to reduce or prevent bacterial contamination. It is known as a hormone disruptor as well and can cause weight gain and lead to infertility.

  • Dimethicone is a type of silicone added to haircare products and acts like a protective layer to the hair shaft but it builds up residue on your scalp, prevents moisture from entering the hair, and clogs the pores.

  • Retinyl palmitate can cause skin itching, redness, scaling, and peeling, and may also cause cancer, thus carcinogenic. It is added to shampoo, sunscreens, and other anti-aging products.

  • Alcohol is used in hair care and can make your hair extremely dry, it is used as a thickener in shampoo, and can cause brittleness in hair.

  • Fragrances. Many companies list fragrances as just the word “fragrance.” You need to be smarter than this false advertising! Most brands are smart enough not to not reveal the exact ingredients and put them in one category. Fragrance parfum are highly synthetic and made with a variety of toxic chemicals. How else can you make apple pie shampoo? But, in a lab they do not add natural flowers and fruits. But Young Living does, they do add the essential oils and are very carefully grown and distilled and added to their products.

  • Colors. We love to see pretty looking colors in our shampoo but these ingredients are derived from coal, tar, or patrolym. You can identify synthetic colors on the labels by the terms FD&C or DNC.

  • Toluene is a petrochemical solvent used in most hair dyes. It is found naturally in crude oil. This chemical is also used in gasoline and paint thinner. It can hamper your immune system and cause birth defects. It can cause headaches and dizziness short term, but it can leave permanent effects on your central nervous system. It is labeled as benzene or phenyl methane, toluol and methylbenzene.

  • Risorius cal is a common crystalline ingredient in your hair dyes and bleaching agents. It can cause functional disabilities in the immune system and thyroid disruption.

  • Selenium sulfide is a proven carcinogen, cancer causing compound, which means there is no safe exposure to this chemical. In fact, lab tests on mice showed development of tumors. It can also cause damage to the liver and kidneys. It is commonly found in anti-dandruff shampoos as an anti-infective medication.

  • Quaternium 15 is a formaldehyde releaser, it is a surfactant and preservative used in shampoos and conditioners. It is an ammonium salt, is harmful as a skin toxicant and allergan. It has caused reproductive toxicity in animals during testing. Formaldehyde is carcinogenic, there is the potential link to cancer.

Critical Mission

So, we are on a mission, it is critical that you swap out your personal care products. The number one poison in your family home is actually laundry soap. Because you are poisoned in three ways. Topical exposure with the clothing touching your skin. Outgassing as you are washing in your home, and outgassing as the clothes sit in your closet all night and you breathe in the toxic fumes.

The number two poison is personal care products. A third of the ingredients on the top 15 most dangerous chemicals list may cause cancer or hormone disruptions. One in three men and one in five women will have cancer by the age of 50. But listen to this! The American Cancer Society says only five percent are genetic. That means five percent of cancer cases are genetic. That means we have to get to a point where we stop saying everything is going to kill me and we start reading labels with a discerning eye. I know those people that say everything is going to kill me, something is going to kill me. How about we take control and say, “I am not going to use those things that are going to kill me anymore.” Because it really is that important. If we just kind of blow off everything how do we really even care about our bodies and our temples that we have been given? So something as simple as snagging one shampoo over another could have a life changing repercussion for you and your family.

If we take a closer look at the ingredients in the Young Living Shampoo, we find that we have coco glucoside which is a surfactant and cleanser derived from coconut. We have coco betaine which is a surfactant derived from coconut. We have all of these things that are derived from safe sources. I could go through all the ingredients but I am not going to in this podcast. If you want a list of all the ingredients I would be happy to send it to you, just send me a message.

Shampoo Comparison

Let’s put these two shampoos side by side. We know that the cheaper shampoo includes all the ingredients already listed earlier are under five dollars. They can cause frizzy hair, disrupt your hormones, hurt the environment and have ingredients that can cause breast cancer, link to long term damage of the scalp, and endocrine disruption, and I could keep going, they can trigger asthma, lead to hair loss, hamper your immune system, cause birth defects and even lead to tumors.

However, you have product number two. Young Living’s Copaiba Vanilla Moisturizing Shampoo, no known side effects after being used by millions of customers globally and is held to an organic standard. It contains water, coconut, palm kernel oil, non-GMO corn, ningXia wolfberry extract, and berries of the rowan tree. Just amazing ingredients derived from incredible sources. So, you look at the cost. Young Living’s shampoo is about 20 dollars. I take it on the chin for that. But when you are extracting seaweed, infused with essential oils and coconut, filling with enzymes and healthy algae and using products with ningXia wolfberry, loaded with antioxidants, it is hard to source and stock every single building block to make a shampoo that is powerful and safe. A bottle of Young Living’s shampoo lasts me a good six months, so that means three dollars a month. I can protect my endocrine system and cross 15 dangerous chemicals off the list that should not be in my house or on my body.

A Better Way

That being said, Young Living’s shampoo is not diluted so it is very concentrated. So if you are used to using an entire palm full of your previous shampoo you would want to adapt to use just a small amount of Young Living’s shampoo.

You made it past the hardest part of this podcast, the label reading. We are going to go into a few other things. Your hair may go through a detox if you switch over to Young Living’s shampoo because there is all that build up from all those chemicals. So be warned of that. I have some ideas for you, to help you strip your hair of those chemicals and I can give you those recipes as well.

When you wash your hair, you want to totally saturate your hair. You are going to add two teaspoons of shampoo to the palm of your hand. Most of us use way too much, and when you use Young Living’s you can use even less. Rub it between your hands and lather it. There are no cancer causing foaming agents so you are not going to get lots of foam. You will have fewer suds but that is okay, you do not want that foam even though we tend to like that foam and have gotten used to that foam as a society. Apply the shampoo to your scalp, massage it until after your head is sudsy, and work it in. Pay most attention to your scalp. The cleansing agents work right away so you can rinse right away. I do add some oils to my Young Living shampoo just because I like to have just a little bit more of Rosemary which helps with any type of yeasty stuff that might be on your head. You can add Cedarwood or Lavender and just put it right in the bottle, shake the bottle up, and it is good to go. Now there are a couple of other options. I do have a DIY for you today called “Mermaid Hair Serum.”

One of my favorite recipes lately has been this DIY scalp treatment. Every once and a while I suffer from dandruff that is annoying. I think it is from all the years of toxic chemicals that I poured on my head. But, we are working on that and will keep working on that until it is gone. What I do that really seems to help is a large batch of this recipe. This helps to moisturize. The carrier oil that I use is Young Living's V-6 oil. I put this recipe on my scalp and let it sit for 20 minutes or even sleep on it and wash it out in the morning. My scalp is so moisturized and my scalp feels so great when I am done. You can shower and wash as normal.

Challenge

I know you were thinking, what was she going to talk about hair and the ingredients in our shampoo and why does it matter? I want to challenge you to create a DIY and work on getting products with those harmful synthetic chemicals out of your homes, bathrooms, and showers. Have confidence in what you are doing. Play with your oils, play with your hair, rest, and do it at a pace that you can handle. Some people need to do little bits at a time, other people want to clean out their entire home in one weekend. At any level it can be overwhelming, and I totally understand that. Whatever you decide, when we know better, we do better.

We need to be aware and stop buying products that are harmful because that is the only way we are going to tell the people making them we do not want them any more. We really vote with our dollars when it comes to these products.

I hope you enjoyed this episode, and these  ideas to make your hair beautiful and fabulous.

Episode 38 - Help during the Panic

Guest - Melissa

Welcome, today we have a special guest. I am getting so many messages from people talking about feeling sad for such a long period of time due to all that is going on in our world right now. People are overwhelmed and lots of people are having trouble with periods of time where their heart starts racing, pulse starts going, they start sweating, and they cannot control it because of so many things piling up on each other. I am so excited to hear the information that my guest speaker has for us today. She is going to talk about one such moment and what she did to really combat that.

Her name is Melissa, and she is from South Carolina. We are talking via Zoom and it is super fun for me to have her on. She is a homeschool mom of a five and nine year old, she is also a soccer mom, so she is nursing her voice because I am sure there is a lot of good yelling that goes on at soccer games! She and I met during a Young Living training where we met weekly to talk about what we were doing with the business side of things. Our group stayed together, and we kept talking, sharing about our lives, and about the business side of Young Living and it has been really really fun to get to know her in this capacity.

Melissa, thank you for joining us and sharing your story with us today.

Thank you Christen for having me.

I am curious, I know your story involves Peace & Calming, but walk us through from beginning to end. What happened, what did you do, and was this a normal thing in your life?

Okay, so my story starts probably 15 years ago. I worked for the Department of Mental Health for the state of South Carolina. My job was to help clients reach goals with positions and in the community. I helped people take their medicine, be on time for their appointments, and I also did therapy with people. In that time, I worked there for nine years, I was teaching other people to manage their stress and anxiety but I was neglecting to take care of myself. So I found myself in a place where my diet was horrible, I was not exercising at all, I had some really terrible habits that were not going to promote any growth for my body, I was on antidepressants, and I was also taking anti anxiety medicine. I could not remember things that were happening. I had a nephew who was born, I was there the whole time, and someone was asking me to retell the story days later and I could not remember the details. It was horrible. I knew it was because my brain was fogged up with medicine and junk and I knew I had to do something.

It was perfect timing in my life because I was making lots of other changes. So I really did a reset, a big detox with my body. I kind of did a cleanse that was un-researched and did not really know anything that I was doing. I just felt like I needed a change. I fasted for a week, I only drank water, I did not take my medicine, and it was horrible. I was very sick. As you can imagine.

Your body was in shock.

It was a big shock to my body. So then I realized I probably needed some help with this. I went to my chiropractor and started talking about making some changes, and over a six-month period I converted my diet to mostly plant based. I also started getting regular exercise. I started doing yoga every single day of my life. Just 10 minutes, five minutes some days, just whatever I could fit in. It was a huge struggle. I cannot tell you enough about the amount of dedication I had to for myself to make this happen. I have not put this much effort in my life into anything since. That is a devastating thing to say, but it took a lot to make these changes. But I will tell you, after the first two weeks of making diet changes and being supported with a plan, I noticed a lot of changes in my life. Oils did not come in till much later.

I was still suffering from panic. I had panic disorder. I could feel it growing and I could feel anxiety in my mind getting bigger and bigger like a snowball. So it may have started with one little thought like “hey, I am sure I did unplug the curling iron or flat iron.” And then the thought would snowball into “oh my gosh, the fire department is probably at my house, and I know there was a towel next to the curling iron and that is catching on fire.” Then the thought would be, “and then my neighbor’s house…” you know. And it would be huge, and by the time I got that under control I would be sweating, I would have a migraine because it wreaked havoc on my body. And so as I started to make my changes, those things got better. Those things were farther apart, and a little bit more manageable.

Yoga really helped create a mindset that was more peaceful and realistic. And then, someone shared Young Living with me. I guess I had been on the train for about a year of really healthy living and really analyzing products that were coming into our house. It was for nonsense reasons that we brought oils into our house.

Then all of a sudden I found the panic build, and I had read that Peace & Calming was something that could help with panic disorder, panic attacks, is what I read. I thought to myself, this is an opportunity. Peace & Calming came in my original starter kit along with Valor which was an excellent oil that I used often daily, but I never used Peace & Calming in the day ever. It was always one that I just did at night because I just did not know, I was new, I was going by what it did to me, it helped me sleep. So I could feel the panic building and I could feel myself really having that aura of “you are about to have a panic attack” and you have things to do, you have got to fix this. So I grabbed Peace & Calming and I sat on the floor and I huffed the bottle and fell asleep right there on the floor in the middle of a moment that days before, could have lasted me a whole week of not sleeping and elevated my heart rate. It is hard to describe if you have never been in a panic situation because it is not just that panic attack that lasts like minutes, it is what your body has to go through in the end to recover from those minutes of extreme adrenaline pumping through your veins and it is a big deal, it is powerful.

So when I was about to relax to the point where I fell asleep on the floor I was blown away. I will honestly tell you, I have not had a panic situation. I have felt it happening, I have used my resources, and I have been able to really have that under control. Recently, and I am sure that it has a lot to do with world events, I have no idea, but I have felt the panic and the weight building and building. I have been able to come back to my resources. There were probably two whole years that I did not use Peace & Calming, because I did not need it any more. I had healed the places in my life that had caused the anxiety and it was not the oils that healed it. It was the management that I did for my diet, exercise, mindset, and personal development that I was doing, and the oils were helping me manage my emotions. Because,... aroma therapy works!

I find myself using Peace & Calming almost daily again, and I am okay with that, because it is working, it is doing its job. It is just a telling sign that there are other people that need to know about this. Because if I was to a place that I did not need it, and here I sit lathering myself in it so I can go to soccer practice with my kids, there are other moms that feel like me. We have to get this word out Christen, this is our job, to let people know!

Yes, thank you! I am sitting here cheering, because I love this story! I have so many messages from people asking “what do I do, because this is crippling me?” Just hearing your story will be a blessing to so many, so thank you so much! I get emotional too because I know what we are living in now, it is real, people are feeling the weight of everything right now. No matter what side of the spectrum you are on, it is weighing on you and that is the gravity of it. I really appreciate this story.

Melissa, I know everything feeds off of each other, your diet, mindset, low impact working out, everything goes together. Personal care products are so, so important to get the bad things out. Endocrine disruptors  are in the products we buy, and we bring them into your home. They are made with not good ingredients, and some of them that say they are green are not actually green, they still have horrible ingredients.

What would you say was the hardest thing to implement as far as one of those changes?

Oh wow, what an excellent question! You know, I am honestly going to say, I have amazing will power, so when I make a decision about things I am usually pretty good about not turning around. So my diet changes were really simple for me, they were really easy. The idea that I had to exercise my body, every day, and finding the time to do that, and feeling so tired - and feeling so tired all the time, and still having to do something to help myself. It was easy to make a diet change, it was just a swap, I was still making food, it was still a transition of food. It was not that something had to be more or less. But the exercise that was really, and I will honestly say, it was the most impactful thing that I did. I started practicing yoga, and I know you are a yoga teacher, and you know the benefits and just to be able to quiet my mind, and move my body and exercise at the same time was amazing. And the results were really really amazing as well. Still to this day, I do not do it every single day any more, and I really should, but I do it enough that I still feel the benefits. And if you are not doing something for yourself that will be the hardest thing that you will add. Adding something to your already busy and already tired day, will not be easy but it will be worth it.

It does not have to be yoga, it could be going for a walk outside or whatever is best for that person. Walking is great, being outside is great, even moving in your living room. I like to workout in my living room and have a couple of options that I do. I have a trampoline when I need more cardio, and then I have my more slower low impact fitness classes as well.

Melissa, this story was amazing, and thank you so so much, I am grateful that you shared this with us.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Yes, I just want to make sure that people heard the part of the story where I said “all I did was huff the bottle.” I did not pour it on myself, I did not turn on the diffuser, I just opened the bottle and just breathed it in. I think that is so important that we understand that these oils are going to work for you if you just open the bottle. That is all you have to do. Get them in your hands, open the bottle, and do not be scared to breathe it in.

Thank you so much Melissa!

Thanks so much for having me.

Episode 37 - Kicking Anxiety in the A$$

We are going to be continuing our discussion about what you can do to help support your mental health when things are rough. I know just like everyone else, we cannot control our situations, when things are hard, and what happens to us on a daily basis. All of those things, for some people, get so overwhelming, and it really has an affect on your mental health. So, I am trying to give you little bits and pieces, and glimpses into what other people do to help them with their mental health if they have racing thoughts, or things piling up in a way they cannot control. So, with those bits and pieces that other people are doing, I hope that in this capacity, it will help you with your journey toward healing and hope when it comes to controlling your thoughts and what you can do. Hopefully this information will help prevent you from going into that spiral of everything being out of control.

Recent Book

A book that I just picked up is called Kicking Anxiety in the A$$ ...a little at a time by Stacy Tiegs (2020). In this book she talks about her story. How she brought her family, everyone being on a prescription antidepressant or antianxiety medication, to understanding about the body and how everything works together. When you take something that is just going to treat one symptom, you are not getting to the root cause of the problem and so what Stacy (2020) discusses in here is how she got to the root cause of the issue with her kids, with her husband, and with herself, and how she really took control of her family’s health. I think this is so admirable! Her health journey is just amazing.

One of the stories in her book specifically, I am going to read for you. This story starts on page 9 of Stacy Tiegs (2020) book Kicking Anxiety in the A$$.

Emily had always been quiet and introverted, but when she really started tuning us out and her grades started to drop, I knew there was a bigger issue. We watched her slowly isolate herself and completely withdraw from social activities. We tried a few support groups that were totally ineffective. Attending groups may have made us a little more aware of our issues as parents, but we honestly didn’t connect with other families that well. Being in a large circle talking about our problem was not giving us the answers we sought.

We were busy; not neglectful by any means, but you know, we were just like any other mother and father. We were raising children the best we knew how while working full time to support our family. We worked to demonstrate hard work and good ethics to our kids, and for the most part, they respected both of us. So from the very beginning, we often wondered what Emily could possibly have to be depressed about. As the months continued, there was no denying she needed help.

As Emily entered the 7th grade, we took her in for a mental check-up at the clinic. That led to the diagnosis of anxiety and depression, and Emily was on a daily medication at the age of thirteen. A few months after she started the medications, her jaw problems began to worsen. I took her to a specialist, and he told me he had never seen a girl her age with such tight jaw muscles. She had an extreme case of TMJ. That made my heart break. WHY was my sweet girl clenching so badly? As the months rolled on, we booked appointments with more specialists, endured constant hours of eclectic stimulation and chiropractic care, and tried every mouth appliance known to mankind. We had no idea the muscle pain could also be tied to emotions and anxiety and depression. We spent thousands of dollars in vain researching the symptoms, but failed to seek the root cause.

It felt as though we were on a roller coaster ride from hell. Some days weren’t so bad. But some days, Emily didn’t come home from school. Now at 16, she was ignoring all the rules and doing what she wanted when she wanted. Emily even threw parties when Tom and I would leave for the weekend. We would come home and find evidence of some serious ragers. Having an in-ground pool made it a fun place for everyone - especially when the parents are gone. The potential liability we could have been responsible for was too awful to even think about. When the neighbors told me there were cars coming in and out, kids blaring music (probably drinking), and kids jumping from our roof down into the pool, I really was starting to wonder where we went wrong. I was living a parent’s nightmare.

How had we allowed the situation to get this bad? We tried many common forms of discipline. Grounding her never really worked, nor did taking away her phone. In fact, pretty much everything we tried only seemed to make things worse. The harsh reality was that we were just busy, young and naive parents who didn’t even realize there was a problem until Emily was out of control.

I am going to jump ahead now to page 18, to the section entitled, “Miracles Really Do Happen.”

One day as I was working, a beautiful woman walked into my store. I remember she was holding a little pink bottle of something in her hand. She wore a white coat, and I swear she had a halo over her head just like an angel. Her name was Jewels. I remember that moment clear as day. There was nobody else in the store, and I actually remember being happy I had time to be present with her. She sat up at my Bead Bar and we chatted for a long time, and then she told me about essential oils. These were brand new to me, but she said she taught classes and thought my store would be a perfect place for one. At the time, they looked expensive, so I didn’t really take her seriously until I smelled that bottle of Joy she was holding. She gave me an experience that day, and I will never forget it.

I enrolled in Young Living in 2012, and this is when I finally learned there was a better way. I listened to Jewels and hosted an oils class in my store, and I had no idea that all of the free education I received that night would change the course of my family’s life forever.

From my previous involvement in other network marketing companies, five to be exact, this was a completely different experience. There wasn’t anything salesey about it. Not one thing. I was worried about the cost though. I never thought about the “worth” of something, just about the money going out. I thought, “oh man, if it’s natural, it’s going to cost me more.” That word natural just sounded expensive. But during the class, she shared valid points and hit home with crazy awesome testimonies. All of a sudden the price tag didn’t matter. The stories I heard about emotions and how this could help my Emily was all that mattered. How can you put a price tag on that? Jewels knew I had a need, and she offered possible solutions - so I signed up with a kit. Thank God someone opened my mind to something different because God knew I needed a plan. He also knew I needed to become more teachable.

So Stacy goes on to talk about her family’s story in this book and it really is powerful. On page 26, there is a section called “Break Free.” She says,

Ever since I’ve learned about functional medicine, my thoughts and beliefs are so different - and so is my life. I simply changed my thoughts, which changed my beliefs, and therefore changed actions. And now I am experiencing completely different results.

People typically don’t just wake up one day feeling depressed with anxiety. Rather, depression can get hold of a person in many different ways. There are so many factors that can become part of the bigger problem. It’s not just one thing.

Whether the mental illness is caused by a traumatic event or it’s generational, many of the steps towards healing involve making small changes. Along the way, you are bound to think these little changes can’t possibly make a difference. But let me tell you, these little things that you think don’t matter, do matter. In order for things to change, you have to change. As you go along, you will begin to grasp how important these little things are.

If you feel weak and inadequate, just take smaller steps. You’ll soon be surprised at where you find yourself when you keep going.

If you truly are ready to break free, continue on with me to page 27 of Stacy Tiegs’ book. Please watch “Science of Thought” by Dr. Carolyn Leaf which is a YouTube video

Dr. Leaf is an expert regarding the mind-brain connection and how memories affect mental health. This video is a first step to understanding how your past and present thoughts determine your emotional and physical well being.

Something that is so important that I want to end this episode is on page 29, when Stacy Tiegs talks about empowering yourself and your children.

We have to learn how to empower ourselves and our children and build them up like it’s nobody’s business. Ditching those old thought patterns and speaking positive language into their hearts and mind is where it starts. Remember, you are your thoughts, and your subconscious never forgets.

We conscientiously need to be speaking positive and uplifting things into our children everyday. It’s not about saying, “Great job” every five minutes, but really stepping into the moment, looking them in the eye and speaking from your heart. Tell them they are beautiful and speak of the good in everything they do.

She says one of her favorite quotes is “speak to your children as if they are the wisest, kindest, most beautiful and magical humans on earth, for what they believe is what they will become.” This quote is from Brooke Hampton.

That is all that I am going to share with you today. We are going to continue on in Stacy Tiegs’ book in another episode. In the next episode we are going to be talking about a technique that she suggests to help you shift your thoughts and feelings from ruling your lives. We are going to move into that in the next couple episodes. Thank you so much for joining me.

Say with me the positive affirmation of the week: “I can control my thoughts and actions.”
